2010 Jean Schliem Scholarship Award Winners Announced
The HCIA recognizes that education is THE KEY to a well-developed workforce. And no one with HCIA understood that connection better than our first Executive Director, Jean Schliem. The scholarship is named in her honor because of her strong conviction and belief in education.

The winners of the 2010-2011 HCIA $1000 Scholarships were: Sean Michael Martin, son of Melissa & Robert Martin of Marrero and Melissa Ann Mueller, daughter of Janet & Ernest Mueller.

Martin graduated with honors from Thomas Jefferson High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society for three years and has been recognized through the Jefferson Parish Breakfast of Champions program. He was active in school where he lettered in soccer, played football, served on the teams Quiz Bowl, and was in the Drama Club. His father, Robert Martin is employed with HCIA member company Hydril-Tenaris.

Mueller graduated with honors from the Academy of Our Lady. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the National English Honor Society. She participated in the Congressional Youth Leadership Conference and New York Leadership Retreat. Her mother, Janet Mueller is employed with HCIA member company, Mississippi River Bank.

This year, HCIA received over 30 applications from area high school seniors. A special committee, chair by Legier Kuhner of West Jefferson Industrial Medicine, met to review and judge the applications.

“It is very rewarding to see the level of excellence these students achieve” said Kuhner. “All the applicants far exceeded our expectations when it came to extracurricular activities and volunteerism” he added.

The Harvey Canal Industrial Association is dedicated to improving the quality of
education of our youth by providing scholarships to qualified high school
seniors. The HCIA will offer four scholarships worth $1,000 each for 2009 –
2010. TWO scholarships will be given to candidates attending a traditional two or four year program; and TWO scholarships will be given to candidates attending a Technical or Trade College.

The goal of the scholarship program is to help students of exceptional promise reach their full
potential through education. Scholarships are given for a wide variety of experiences, career
goals and higher education plans.
Each scholarship will be paid directly to the College or University of the applicant’s choice.
